The difference between stepper motor and geared motor



Before answering this question, let's  understand what is a stepper motor and a geared motor first.


A stepping motor is an open-loop control element stepping motor that converts an electrical pulse signal into an angular displacement or a linear displacement. In the case of non-overload, the speed and stop position of the motor depend on the pulse signal frequency and number of pulses, regardless of the load change, when the stepper driver receives a pulse signal, it drives the stepper motor to rotate a fixed angle in the set direction,for the "step angle", its rotation is run step by step at a fixed angle. The angular displacement can be controlled by controlling the number of pulses to achieve accurate positioning;

The pulse frequency is controlled to control the speed and acceleration of the motor rotation, thereby achieving the purpose of speed regulation.


The geared motor is composed of a reducer (gearbox) + motor. The motor provides high speed, but the torque is small and the inertia is large. The function of the reducer is to reduce the speed and increase the torque,reduce inertia to reach the ideal speed and torque; for example, there are electric curtains, electric shutters, all use geared motors, slow speed, large torque.


Simply speaking, the stepper motor can control the fixed length and fixed speed. For example, the worktable can be set up at 1 meter, and the speed can be set freely. Common application cases are the stepper motor of the milling machine. Both

The difference is that the stepping motor can be fixed speed, timing (how long to go, how fast to set); the speed of the reducer is determined by the reduction ratio, can not adjust the speed of the speed; but the stepper motor torque is small, the geared motor has a large torque.


Stepper motor, can be fixed length control, for example, the workbench walks 1 meter, the speed is 500R/MIN, but the geared motor can't do it. If it is a three-phase asynchronous geared motor, it will decelerate through the gearbox,but the speed is not well adjusted, it is necessary to adjust the speed through the frequency converter, and it can't be said how much I want to go. It needs to realize the function of the stepping motor (fixed length speed regulation), and the inverter and the encoder is used together. In addition, the power of the gear motor is large, and the general force of the stepping motor is not so large. The stepping gear can be powerful.
