What are the differences between stepper motor and gear motor?

The stepper motor is an open-loop control element that converts an electrical pulse signal into angular displacement or line displacement. In the case of non-overload, the motor speed, stop location depends on the pulse signal frequency and pulse counts, without the impact of load changes.When the stepper driver receives a pulse signal, it drives the stepper motor to rotate a fixed angle toward the setting direction, called "step angle", and its rotation is to run at a fixed angle step by step. The angular position shift amount can be controlled by controlling the number of pulses, so as to achieve the purpose of accurate positioning.At the same time, by controlling the pulse frequency to control the motor speed and acceleration,so as to achieve the purpose of speed control.


The gearbox is made up of a reducer (gearbox) + motor. The motor provides high speed, but the torque is small and the inertia is large. The function of the gear unit is to reduce the speed, improve the torque and reduce the inertia, and reach the ideal speed and torque; such as common electric curtains, electric roll gate, use gearmotor to slow down the speed, enlarge the torque.

Simply to say, stepper motor can be fixed length and speed control system, for example, the table move 1 meter, the speed can be set free, common application cases are,milling machine table stepper motor. The difference between the two is stepper motor can be fixed speed, timing(How long to go, how fast can be set); reducer speed is determined by the reduction ratio, can not adjust the speed; but stepper motor torque is small, gear motor torque is big.

Stepper motor, you can set the fixed speed and length control, for example, the table move 1 meter, speed 500R / MIN, but gear motor can not achieve.If it is three-phase asynchronous gear motor, it is through the gear box to slow down, but the speed can not to tune,need to through the inverter,moreover,can not achieve how long you want.

 If need to achieve the function of the stepper motor (fixed length and speed control), must use with the inverter and encoder together. In addition,gear motor has large torque, stepper motor general torque is not big,but stepping motor with reducer can achieve very large torque.
